“Well, hell, nobody’s as good as Jackson,” Mac reminded them. “Although we’ve been hearing rumors about some guy breaking your record, Jackson.”

“Which reminds me.” Cade zeroed in on Mac. “Addison said you lost a bet to her and you’re supposed to let her shoot Pretty Patty.”

“I’d never let anyone touch my rifle. She’s trying to pull a fast one.”

“Good to know. Cade grimaced then grinned. “Just the thought of that kind of fire power in her hands makes me nervous.”

“Does this mean the playroom is going to be busy tonight?”

Before Cade could answer, Jackson jumped into the conversation. “You know, I’ve been thinking about Addison saying she could teach Jenna things about riding that I couldn’t teach her. Makes a man wonder what she meant. Doesn’t it?”

A silent message passed between the brothers. “Ben, I think we need to test your equipment. Addison’s hat is on the hat stand by the back door. I’d like video and audio.”

“While you’re at it do Jenna’s, too,” Jackson told him.

“Will do. They’ll never even know I touched them.”

Thor laughed. “I thought Addison was awfully relaxed for a sub whose orgasms had been withheld.”

Cade stacked his salad plate on his dinner plate then stood up. “Life is never boring with Addison.”

  * * * *

Addison adjusted her hat again then looked up at Jenna as she checked her posture. “Good, now keep your back straight as I lead you around the corral. Try to keep your movements in rhythm with Molly’s movements.”

“So, how am I doing,” Jenna asked her.

“Good. It helps that you rode as a kid. Really, it’s just a matter of remembering what you already know. We’ll have you riding with me and Remington in no time.”

  “On Molly?”

Chuckling, Addison shook her head, grinned, and looked up at Jenna. “No. For that you’re going to need something faster. One that can jump, too. You’ll have to prove to Jackson you can take care of one of his babies before he’ll let you take one out.”

Addison led the mare around the corral again then removed the lead. “Okay, now you take her around. Once at a walk then a couple times at a trot. And, remember what I told you about posting. Try to rise and fall with her or you’ll hurt her back and your ‘you know what.’”

“Don’t want to be hurting my ‘you know what’”—Jenna giggled—“when the entire idea here is to get a little somethin’ somethin’ on the side if you know what I mean?” Giggling, she walked Molly around the corral as Addison sat on the top rail of the fence and cheered her on. Clicking her tongue, she straightened her posture and tried to rise and fall as Molly trotted around the corral.

“Okay, slow her back down to a walk now,” Addison called out as she jumped down from the top rail, landing solidly on her booted feet.

Jenna leaned down and high-fived her. “Wow, that’s really something. I’d like to get Jackson on the back of a horse with me.” Seeing Addison’s blush, she cursed then told her, “Is there anywhere on this ranch you and Cade haven’t fucked?”

Addison squinted her eyes as she looked up at her, a look of deep concentration on her face. “Um, inside or outside?”

  “Either.”

“The gym. All those machines and weights scare me and I can’t concentrate if I get very close to them.”

  “Okay, now outside.”

Looking around, Addison spotted the foaling barn then shook her head. Turning in a circle, she continued to shake her head eliminating building after building. “Uh, the garden shed. Snakes.”

“There are snakes in the garden shed?”

“Cade says there aren’t any, but I think there might be.” Turning, she grinned up at Jenna. “So, there you go. You and Jackson can be the first to fuck in the garden shed.”

  “With the snakes?”

“Cade says there aren’t any,” Addison insisted.

Jenna slid down from Molly’s back then led her toward the gate. “I am not going anywhere near that shed. And you owe me big-time for using up all the good places.”

Addison ran to keep up with Jenna’s longer steps. “It isn’t a competition, you know?”

Jenna gave her one of those “really” looks. “Don’t even go there. You’re the most competitive person I know. Does Cade even know what you do in the gym? Does he know about the warehouse?”

“Shhh,” Addison told her, looking around. “You never know who’s listening around here. Don’t be talking about the warehouse.”

“Damn, I’m sorry, Addison. I forgot about all the surveillance around here. Maybe they didn’t hear anything.”

“I think we’re okay way out here. Let’s put Molly up then go have something to eat. I’m dying for some waffles.”

“Damn, girl, we just ate an hour ago. If I didn’t know better I’d think you were preggers.” Leaning down to open the gate latch, she didn’t see Addison’s soft smile or the way she touched her tummy but the camera on Jenna’s hat caught both movements.

Hearing whoops and hollers coming from the house, both women looked toward it, identical looks of puzzlement on their faces. “Wonder what that’s all about?” Jenna asked.

“No telling,” Addison told her. “Here comes Gus. He’ll take Molly for us.”

As they handed the mare over, the door of the house slammed open behind them and Cade came hurrying across the yard, a big smile on his face. “Hey, baby, we’re going to town. Ben says Baume has breakfast at Joe’s some mornings so we’re going there.”

“Well, that works out pretty good. Addison was just saying she wanted some waffles and Joe makes the best waffles in the county.”

“Perfect,” Cade told them as he picked Addison up and carried her back to the house. “You two get dressed then we’ll head into town. We can have Ben and Mac bring Thor’s profiler to your house. That’ll give us a chance to talk where everyone can be comfortable. You can even take a nap before we go to court if you want to, baby.”

As soon as they walked through the back door, Cade took Addison’s hat from her head and Jackson grabbed Jenna’s before giving her a kiss and a pat on the butt. “Go get dressed for town, angel.”

“Cade? You can put me down now.”

Cade looked down at her, his eyes searching her face before he gave her a soft kiss then gently set her down on her feet and patted her bottom. “Hurry, baby. But not too fast. Don’t fa—oomph, what the hell, Jackson?” Cade asked him as he rubbed his stomach where Jackson had elbowed him.

  “We’re in a hurry, remember?”

Jenna grabbed Addison’s hand and pulled her through the man-lined hall, thinking it was like running a gauntlet of smiling buffoons and wondering why they were all standing around looking so happy. As they climbed the stairs, she looked back and saw them staring up at them. “Creepy,” she whispered. “It’s a good thing a psychologist is coming. While she’s here we can have her check these guys out and make sure they’re all of sound mind.”

Addison glanced back and giggled when she saw them watching her and Jenna. Cade’s eyes were on her ass while Jackson’s were on Jenna’s. “Well, at least we already know they all have sound bodies.”

Giggling, they separated at the top of the stairs.

At the bottom of the stairs one soon-to-be father, four soon-to-be uncles, and three soon-to-be surrogate uncles smiled.

“I’ve got to get her to the doctor,” Cade told them, the worrying already setting in.

“You’ve got to wait until she tells you first,” Jackson reminded him.

“Yeah, bro. Women like to choose their own time for things like this,” Logan said.

“She’ll want to surprise you,” Luc said.

Zane had his cell out and was busy reading the screen. “This says pregnant ladies should see a doctor as soon as possible, take prenatal vitamins, have a balanced diet, get plenty of rest, light exercise, and no stress.” Looking up, he told them,
“We have to get this situation with Baume settled as soon as possible.”

“Do you think she’s stressed out about Jenna being arrested?” Luc asked.

“Did she fall the other night when she got slapped?” Logan asked.

“We need a book,” Zane said. “Here’s one called ‘Hello Daddy–A New Father’s Guide to What to Expect When You’re Expecting.’”

“We don’t need that,” Jackson told them. “We’ve been dealing with pregnant females all our lives.”’

“She’s not a mare, Jackson,” Zane told him.

“Same difference. She needs what’s she’s already got. Good food, light exercise, shelter from the elements, a visit from the vet, and some tender loving care.”

“We’ll just have to back off until she’s ready to tell me,” Cade told them. “In the meantime I’ll just deal with things as they come, starting with her stallion. Jackson, Addison arranged for Remington to service Nick McClain’s mare next week, but have Gus take him today. I’ll tell Addison when we get back.”

“She’s not going to be happy about that,” Logan said.

“I think she’ll be relieved. I told you all you had to do to keep her off Remington was give her something she wanted more,” Jackson reminded Cade.

Cade slapped him on the back as he walked by him. “You sure did.” He was halfway up the steps before he told them, “If we’re going to town, I’m going to get cleaned up and grab a couple weapons.”

“Damn, he’s right,” Jackson told them as he followed Cade up the stairs. “Meet back here in fifteen. Remember, the courthouse has a metal detector so arm yourselves accordingly.”

“Ben and Mac will remain outside while Cade, Zane, you, and I go in with Jenna and Addison,” Thor told Jackson. “Luc and Logan, can you go to Addison’s house and wait for Cassandra?”

“Sure, we can do that,” Logan told him. “We’ll take Luc’s car and you can meet us there after you feed Addison some waffles. But, how will we know Cassandra?”

Thor chuckled. “Just look for the softest little piece of feminine fluff you’ve ever seen and that’s Cassandra. Whatever you do, though, don’t piss her off. That girl can put some major hurt on a guy and she fights dirty.”

  Chapter Eleven

Jenna followed Addison into her house, saw her hesitate for a second, and then ran over to Cassie Edwards and threw her arms around her, all the while squealing with happiness.

“Oh, I didn’t know you were coming. That’s amazing!”

Hearing a snort of disbelief from one of the twins, and sensing an interesting story behind that snort, Jenna ambled over to the couch and dropped down between Luc and Logan. The twin on her left had his arms crossed over his broad chest, his light-green eyes narrowed and a suspicious frown on his face as he watched Cassie, so she decided he must be Luc. “What’s your problem?”

  “Logan.”

  “Oh? What’s he done?”

  “Ask him.”

  “Okay.”

Turning to Logan, she saw he was happy and smiling indulgently at Cassie and Addison. Lazily reclined in the corner of the couch, his fingers interlaced behind his head, long legs stretched out and crossed at the ankles, he watched Cassie with fascinated eyes. Jenna watched as he swept his eyes over Cassie from the top of her golden head to her black and white court shoes then back up again. He couldn’t seem to get enough of her.

  “What’s your problem, Logan?”

“Luc,” he told her without removing his eyes from Cassie.

  “Oh? What’s he done?”

  “He’s being an ass.”

Another snort came from her left. Ignoring the sound for the moment she asked Logan, “Have you talked to him about it?”

“He knows. He’s just being stubborn.”

“You’re ignoring the facts, bro. She’s gunning for us and you keep sticking your head up,” Luc said.

Swiveling her head to the left she grinned at Luc, already knowing the answer but unable to resist asking the question anyway, “Who’s gunning for you?”

  “Addison,” Luc said.

  “What makes you think that?”

“Open your eyes. She asks for a profiler and look what shows up.”

  “You mean Cassie?”

“Yeah. Every time one of her friends shows up one of us gets taken out.”

Laughing, Jenna patted his crossed arms. “You can relax. Addison met Cassie at dance class. She teaches belly dancing and the tango, and, of course, she goes to Club Elysium.”

Luc sat forward, clutched his head, and literally pulled his hair before groaning and telling Logan, “We’re dead, bro. It just keeps getting worse. We’ve got to fight if we want to escape.”

“I’m surrendering,” Logan told him, his voice happy. “Look at her. She’s perfect. Her hair is like a waterfall of molten gold and she’s so pale and soft. Like wedding cake icing. I love icing. Just think how she’ll look between us.”

“I’m going to kick your ass if you don’t shut up,” Luc said, his voice a deep growl. “I’m not surrendering. Not ever.”

“All righty, then,” Jenna told them as she quickly stood up. “Time for me to take a walk.” Before she could escape, Addison waved her over.

“Jenna, look who’s here. It’s Cassie! She’s working for Thor’s profiler Mick. Can you believe that?”

“Yeah, if that’s the story you’re going with, then I say stick to it,” Jenna said before smiling at Cassie. “Hi, Cassie.”

“Hi, Jenna, it’s nice to see you again. Mick asked me to get him on the phone so we can talk to you about your experience with Earl Baume. That way I’ll have a better idea of what we’re dealing with before I try to meet him at the cafe. Do you have time to talk to me now?”

  “Sure. The sooner the better.”

“You can use the den,” Addison said. “I’m going to brew tea for Cade and Thor then pack a few things to take to the ranch.”

Chattering about catching up later that evening, they wandered out into the hallway where they found Cade, Jackson, and Thor checking out the security panel.

“We checked the house and security system. No breaches or attempts,” Cade told Addison as he hooked his arm around her waist and pulled her to his side, his large hand covering her belly.

Jackson hooked an arm around Jenna’s waist and pulled her to him, her back to his chest. She tipped her head back, looking up at him.

  “You okay?”

“Yes, I just want to get this over with so we can get back to our life.”

Jackson leaned down and hid his grin by laying a series of little kisses on her lips then swatted her on the bottom as he released her. “We’re going to take care of Baume.”

“Good,” she told him as she ran her finger down the center of his chest. “You promised to go riding with me when this is over.” Glancing up at him through her lashes, she sent him a flirty little grin as she stroked her finger over his belt buckle suggestively then stepped away. “Cassie and I are going to talk in the den.”

Addison grabbed Cade’s hand and pulled him toward the kitchen. Jackson and Thor trailed behind them, each of them settling on a tall stool at the bar as Addison brewed the tea then disappeared into the pantry. When she came out, she had a can of spinach in her hand. She held up the can. “Look what I found,” she told them, her eyes shining. “I’ve been absolutely dying for some spinach.” Head bent, she pulled a drawer open and began rummaging through it, missing the men’s indulgent smiles. “Aha! Found it,” she told them as she held up the opener.

Cade got up, filled a pitcher with ice and water, then poured the hot brewed tea into the pitcher and stirred it. He held the pitcher up, silently asking Addison if she wanted a glass. She shook her head as she opened the freezer door.

“So, what’s the plan?” Jackson asked. “Where is Cassie staying?”

“The ranch,” Cade told him as he set the pitcher on the table along with several glasses. “Thor has brought in Vincent Vitale to ke
ep an eye on Baume. He’ll make sure he doesn’t put a tag on Cassie. She already has a cover story in place as a freelance writer from Dallas.”

Thor nodded his head. “She interviewed the Long Valley Police Chief, Matt Dailey, earlier this morning. Mac and Ben heard that Chief Dailey told Baume to leave his department or he’d fire him. The person they spoke to either didn’t know why or she’s not telling. They’re looking into it.”

“It was because Baume got caught taking confiscated drugs from the evidence room,” Addison told them as she sat down across from them, a bowl with a scoop of strawberry ice cream topped with spinach in front of her. Taking a bite, she hummed with pleasure. “Oh, yeah, that’s it. Yum!”

“How do you know that?” Thor asked, grimacing when he saw what was in the bowl in front of Addison.

“I know someone who knows someone who was bragging that the drug charges against his son were dropped because the evidence disappeared,” she told them, making air quotes in the air, before stirring the ice cream and spinach together until it was a grayish-pink mess.

“Baby, are you okay?” Cade asked her, swallowing hard as he watched her scrape the last bite from the bowl.

Nodding, she yawned then slid off the high stool.

I’m going to pack a few things before lunch.” Humming her version of either a country western song, or possibly an opera aria, she yawned again on her way out of the kitchen just as Jenna and Cassie walked in.

Jenna covered her ears. “Da—I mean dang, I wish she wouldn’t do that. It always reminds me of two tomcats fighting.” Laughing, she sat down across from Jackson and grinned when he gave her a thumbs up for not cursing. Nudging the bowl with a fingertip, she leaned down and sniffed it. “What the heck is this?”

“Believe me, angel, you don’t want to know.”

“How’d the interview go? Any insight into what we’re dealing with here?” Thor asked Cassie.

“Going on what Jenna said, Mick thinks Baume is very unstable and on the verge of losing whatever control he’s managed to maintain to this point. I think seeing Jenna with Jackson was the trigger that pushed him over the edge. For some reason Jackson is his focus.”
